A MAN was randomly sprayed in the face with a chemical as he walked along the road in Chelmsford.
Police are appealing for witnesses following the attack in Beehive Lane on Wednesday, June 9. The 48-year-old victim was walking along the road at about 11.40pm when he was sprayed by a noxious substance from a passing car.
The man, who lives in the town, suffered reddening and irritation on the back of his neck and right upper arm, but declined medical treatment.
The substance was sprayed by a passenger in a small car, similar in size to a Fiesta, which contained up to three other occupants.
Investigating officer PC Ed Massey said: “The victim was randomly targeted and was sprayed when the car slowed down next to him as he walked along the pavement.
“We are not certain what the substance was, but it could have been some sort of pepper spray brought in from abroad.
“The victim said he did not smell anything and he did not require hospital treatment.
“He had a shower when he got home and the reddening and skin irritation soon cleared.
“We believe there were up to four young men in the car, including one wearing a white England cap.”
Anyone with information should contact PC Massey, at Chelmsford police, on 0300 333 4444.
