Anyone who has played football in Witham over the past 50 years will have heard the name George Long. The Man, the Legend. I heard today that the granddad of football in Witham (thanks Dicky Downes) died last week. When I first moved to Witham in 1980 I didn't know anyone, so I did the only thing I was half good at, played football. I went on to play with George for more than 5 seasons. He taught me so much about the right way to play the game. Even in his 50s he had the energy and enthusiasm of a teenager, he sprayed the ball around like Glenn Hoddle of his beloved Spurs. George played football the way he lived life, with a beaming smile on his face. I last saw him 18 months ago in Sweeneys, still smiling still happy to see me. Goodnight George, the world's a sadder place without you already fella.
