ANOTHER protest to campaign against a city centre mosque being extended is likely.
Members of the Essex division of the English Defence League held a demonstration in Chelmsford on July 21.
Three members of the group were arrested on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence as about 30 members of the far right group marched through the city.
The demo, which was marshalled by police, was to highlight disquiet over a proposal to rebuild the Muslim Shia Ithna Asheri Jamaat of Essex, behind the Royal Mail office, in Victoria Road.
The plan is part of a planning application from supermarket chain Waitrose which plans to build a new store on the Royal Mail site.
As part of the scheme, the chain wants to swap land with the Muslim group which already has permission to build a three-storey community centre.
The Waitrose plan, which is due to be decided by the end of next month, would see a four-storey community centre built for the Muslim group.
The Essex EDL Facebook page says another demonstration is planned in Chelmsford for August 18. Their statement said: “There was a local demonstration held by the Essex division of the EDL.
“The Essex division protests against the mosque proposals as it is felt at a local level this is not needed nor wanted.”
